A new study from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa adds an intriguing microbiome signal to that long-game conversation. In a group of 123 adults, Bifidobacterium adolescentis emerged as the strongest microbial predictor associated with a slower score on DunedinPACE, a DNA-methylation measure designed to estimate the current pace of biological aging.
The value of that finding is not a dramatic promise about stopping the clock. It is a clearer direction: the gut belongs in the long-term performance conversation, and specific microbes deserve specific attention.

Chronological age is simple: the number of years since you were born.
Biological-aging measures try to describe something different—how quickly physiological change may be occurring inside the body. Researchers use several tools for this, including “epigenetic clocks” based on patterns of DNA methylation.
The UH team paired stool microbiome data with blood-based DNA methylation data. They then used machine-learning models to ask whether gut microbial composition carried a detectable signal related to biological aging, independent of chronological age.
The strongest result appeared with DunedinPACE. At the species level, the microbiome model accounted for about 15% of the variation in that measure. B. adolescentis ranked as the strongest predictor associated with a slower DunedinPACE signal.

How To Read The Finding
This was an early human association study. It identifies B. adolescentis as a species worth paying attention to—not as a standalone longevity prescription.
The practical signal is still compelling: the researchers found a measurable connection between the microbiome and a biological-aging pace measure, and B. adolescentis was the strongest species-level predictor in the model.
That puts specificity—not generic probiotic volume—at the center of the conversation. Which organism you choose matters. The inputs that support it matter. And the consistency of the routine matters.

B. adolescentis is a human-associated member of the adult gut microbiome. Earlier research has reported age-related differences in its abundance, which is one reason scientists have become interested in its potential role in healthy aging.
A 2021 study found lower B. adolescentis abundance in adults age 60 and older than in younger groups. Supplementation experiments improved healthspan or lifespan measures in worms and flies and affected aging-related features in a mouse model. Those are mechanistic and animal findings—not proof of a human longevity benefit.

More recent comparative work has also shown that B. adolescentis is not one interchangeable organism. Strains differ. Their functional traits differ. The presence of a species name on a label does not tell you everything about dose, viability, activity, or what happens in one individual gut.
That is another reason to resist the “one microbe equals one outcome” story.
The Athlete Takeaway: Build Capacity, Not A Fountain Of Youth
The responsible takeaway is not to chase a younger biological-age score.
It is to build the conditions that support capacity across time:
- Train consistently, with enough recovery to adapt.
- Eat enough to support the work.
- Give the gut a varied supply of tolerable, fiber-containing foods.
- Practice hydration and fueling before important events.
- Protect sleep as part of the training plan.
- Use testing as context—not as a verdict or identity.
A microbiome result is one snapshot. A biological-aging measure is one model. Neither replaces the lived evidence of whether your training system is helping you stay strong, capable, and engaged.
