More Carbohydrates Can Mean Better Performance. Your Gut Has to Be Ready for It.

If you can take in and use more carbohydrate during a long or hard effort, your performance can improve.

Why This Matters For Active People

Training changes how you eat. Long sessions, race week, recovery, travel, and busy workdays can all shift carbohydrate and fiber intake.

Lowering fiber before a key effort can be useful for some athletes. It should not automatically become the everyday plan.

If better performance requires more carbohydrate during the work, digestive comfort becomes part of the strategy. You need a daily routine that supports the gut, plus specific fueling practice during training.

In one observational study, bodybuilders and distance runners commonly ate low-fiber diets. The groups also showed differences in bifidobacteria and other gut microbes. The study cannot prove that diet caused those differences. It does show why training alone is not a gut routine.

A separate study in trained runners found that short-term high-carbohydrate and high-protein diets produced different performance and microbiome patterns. Results from one small study should not become a universal fueling rule. They do reinforce the value of making nutrition changes with intention.
